Lin doesn’t have a job anymore. What will our cutie do?
Hope you enjoy the chapter
Married (♂x♂) 60
On the first Monday after his job ended, Lin found himself bored when Thomas went out to work. Though it wasn’t time for lunch yet, he had already cleaned the apartment, bought groceries, and washed the laundry. He tried to find a chore or anything to occupy his afternoon, but he ended up playing videogames. However, even that wasn’t as entertaining as before.
I like to play with Tom… I like to beat him and see his annoyed face, he thought as he surfed the net without any goal. Hope he gets home early today.
Lin was so distracted when his phone rang, he almost dropped it. It was an unknown number. Since it wasn’t from out of state, there was little chance of being telemarketing.
“Hello?” he said when he picked up.
“Hi. Is this Lineu?”
“Y-yes, it’s him.”
“My name is Marta. I’m George’s mom.”
“Ah, yes. I remember you when you came to pick him up.” It was the only thing he could think of saying. Did he complain to her ‘cause I beat him on the game? But why call now, after the camp is over?
“The reason I’m calling is because I’d like to confirm you’re the same Lineu who owns that healthy lifestyle blog… eh…” She grew quiet for a moment and then gave the name of the blog.
“Y-yes. I’m the owner.” I can’t believe she knows about it. It got a lot of views after I started posting about how to give your kids a healthy vacation, but for a mom of the camp to know about it…
“I’ve been following for a while and I’d like to say your tips and the exercises you suggested are great.”
“T-thanks! I’m glad to hear that,” Lin beamed. It was the first time someone said that directly. The comments had been increasing slowly and steadily. Though the number of views wasn’t anything compared to huge lifestyle blogs, it was a respectable number for an unknown blog without any marketing.
“I’m not calling just for that. In your bio, it says you’re a physiotherapist. Is that true?”
“Yes. I graduated last year at the federal university. W-what’s this about?”
“I run a clinic, and we are understaffed right now…”
As she explained, Lin widened his eyes, nodding without noticing.
George’s mother wasn’t offering him a job. Not yet. Due to a series of bad luck, they were down four physiotherapists at the same time. She managed to hire two, but she needed at least one more so they wouldn’t have to cancel any appointments until one of the physiotherapists returned from his paid leave. She wanted him to come for a one-week trial.
“Yes… yes… Sure! I’ll see you tomorrow!” Lin said and then hung up.
Can’t believe this! I got a job offer, he thought, beaming as a feeling of relief overtook him. I won’t be unemployed again. But it’s amazing she knew my university teacher, who recommended after she talked about my blog. This world is so small sometimes.
However, it wasn’t all good news. To get the job for real, not only did Lin need to be good, which he was, but he also needed a certain qualification, which he didn’t have. What was worse, when he searched for it, he found out he could get in a one-weekend seminar, which would happen this weekend. However, it was expensive. Considering it was in another state, with traveling and accommodation, there was no way he could afford it.
Before I go ahead and spend money on this qualification, I better wait. Maybe it doesn’t work out at the clinic and they won’t hire me. Then I’d have spent a ton of money I don’t have on something I wouldn’t use…
I’ll figure something out if the time comes. Now, it’s best if I study a bit. It’s been a while since I practiced.
By the time Thomas got home, Lin was too focused on studying. He barely took his eyes off the screen to kiss his boyfriend.
“What you doing, honey?”
“I’m studying. I got a job offer.”
“What? That’s awesome!” Thomas exclaimed, beaming. “How did you get it? Where is it?”
“It’s in a physiotherapy clinic across a hospital. Remember George? His mom called me and said she liked my blog and since she knew my teacher, she offered me a probation period.”
“That’s awesome! I know you’ll get it! Let’s go out to celebrate!” Thomas kissed him on the cheek. “You can have my car tomorrow.”
Under that enthusiasm, Lin only smiled. He couldn’t bring himself to talk about the expensive seminar that was necessary. It’s not even certain that I will get the job…
On Friday, after working almost a week, Lin received his feedback from George’s mother. He was great. Both the patients and the staffed liked him, and he received the job offer officially. When he heard, he was beaming. But by the time he got home, he wasn’t smiling anymore.
“Hey, Lin!” Thomas greeted him with a kiss. “How was it? Did they offer you the job?”
“That’s great!” he exclaimed, hugging and spinning Lin. Then he stopped when he realized his boyfriend wasn’t sharing the excitement. “Why aren’t you happy? Is there something wrong? You didn’t like the job after all?”
“N-no, I loved it. And the people seem nice too…”
“Then why you’re looking as if you got punched in the belly?”
“That’s a good way to describe…” Lin couldn’t help but let out a hollow chuckle. Then he explained the whole situation. “I’ve been trying to think of a way to get the money, but outside of getting a loan with an outrageous rate, I can’t afford the seminar…”
Thomas grew quiet as he leaned against the table, staring at Lin with a hard expression. “You’re kidding, right?”
“I’m hurt if you thought about getting a loan. Didn’t it occur to you to ask me for the money?”
“I thought about it,” he admitted, looking at the floor, holding his elbow. “But that money is yours. I don’t want you spending it with—”
“The love of my life? Oh, yeah, you’re right. I prefer to leave it on my account where the bank can make money from it than give it to you.” Thomas sighed and let go of his annoyance. “You’re doing this.”
“But nothing. Lin, you’re doing this. Even with this seminar hanging over your head, I can tell you had a lot of fun over the week. I’m not letting you miss this opportunity because of money.” He pulled his phone and searched a few things. “Look, there’s a flight leaving at 3 in the morning this Saturday. The seminar starts at 8, right? You can arrive on time. About the hotel…”
Despite his mixed feelings, Lin couldn’t help but fall in love with that man even more.
“Thanks,” he said, hugging him.
Thomas hugged him back but then broke it. “Don’t try to mellow me. I’m still mad. I know we haven’t been dating for long, but way before that, we’re friends. You shouldn’t hesitate about these things with me.”
“I know. And I’m sorry about it. I promise I won’t do it again.”
“Good. Now let’s order a pizza and start packing,” Thomas took his hand and led him to their bedroom.
I’m so lucky to have him, Lin thought, smiling from the bottom of his heart.
