Married (♂x♂) 3

“I can’t believe you dragged me to… to here,” Thomas mumbled as he pushed the shopping cart, not bothering to hide his annoyance. “I’m wasting my precious Saturday morning shopping for stuff I’d never buy…”

“First of all, I didn’t drag you.” Lin’s voice was close to the tone he used when lecturing. Despite that, he had trouble hiding his smile. “You know you can’t keep using the same stuff anymore. It’s beyond sad at this point;”

“The bed and pillow covers are completely fine.”

“You can’t call that covers anymore… they’re full of holes…” Lin pulled his smartphone and showed the photo. “Some are to the point of insult to rags…”

You had it at hand already? Thomas stared at the screen, though there was no need. He himself knew from the beginning his bed sets were almost at hobo level. I don’t even remember when I got it… maybe when I moved out of my parents’…

Even so, his annoyance for being awakened and dragged to the market in his precious Saturday morning was too much he didn’t want to say Lin was right.

“It’s still usable,” he mumbled stubbornly.

“Yeah…it’s not… besides, you may call that usable, but it’s not washable anymore.” Lin flashed a yellow smile as he put his phone away. “Most ripped to beyond repair when I washed it yesterday…”

“What? That’s why I had no bed cover yesterday?”

“I’m surprised you noticed…” Lin beamed, making Thomas avert his eyes. “Anyway, that’s why we need to buy new bed sets as soon as possible.”

The programmer chewed his tongue. “You could’ve bought everything on your own… or online…”

“Oh, c’mon. You know I can’t do that.”

“Huh? Why the hell not?”

Lin sighed exaggeratedly as lowered his head.

Thomas couldn’t help but smile. His childhood friend always did that when he was about to explain something he thought it should be obvious. It was annoying when we were younger, but now is kinda cute, he thought. Then he blushed. What the hell am I thinking…?

“Tom, this stuff we need to feel before buying. What if I ordered one that was itchy? Or the elastic wasn’t good? Or one that gave you a rash?”

Thomas stared at his friend in disbelief. He knew he had no argument to retort, but even so, he didn’t want to yield. “I could always give to my brother… he’s a cheapskate who’d be glad to get that kind of stuff for free.”

“And waste money? No way. Now stop complaining and help me choose.” Lin picked two different bed covers and showed to Thomas. “Which one?”

He took a deep breath and turned to his choices. “I feel like the pink flowers don’t match my eyes too much,” he said in the most sarcastic tone he could muster.

“More like they don’t match your farts,” Lin muttered, getting a grudging laugh from Thomas. “But be serious. Or we’ll end up buying Star Wars bed covers for you.”

For the first time, Thomas seemed interested in that kind of shopping. “It matches me more…”

Lin was between disbelief and pity. “You can’t be serious… Can you imagine bringing a girl and you don’t have big boy bed covers?” he asked when his friend seemed serious.

Thomas stared at the cute man with indifference. “I don’t know if you’re being serious or making fun of me. Either way, both hurt.”

Lin tried to keep a serious face as he held the bed set. But his facade was about to crack. Thomas could tell that.

Then, soon enough, the blond cute man couldn’t contain his smile anymore.

“Why not both?”

Thomas wanted to be mad, but under that smile, it was hard. That cute expression always put me off guard…

“Fine. Let’s get some big boy bedsheets for me… guess it’s about time… But just so you know, I never had Star Wars sheets… when I went to college, I restrained myself from buying those to hide my nerd side…”

Grinning for his victory, Lin walked through the corridor, checking a few patterns and touching the fabric. Thomas stayed where he was, waiting. Eventually, the cute man picked up four bed sets.

The programmer stared at the now not so empty cart. “One for me and one for you… so why four?”

The blond slender man shook his head in a condescending way. “Because there will be a time when I’ll have to wash it. When that happens, neither one of us will want to sleep in a coverless bed.”

Thomas wanted to say a few things but held back. Lin’s right … as usual…

 “Fine… buy them all…”

Lin beamed and picked one he had thrown in the cart. “You won’t regret. Can you imagine getting home tired and them lying on this fabric?”

Thomas said nothing as Lin rubbed the bedsheet on his face. “You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?”

“A little.”

Stop with that cute grin…it’s not fair… The programmer sighed, put the bed set on the cart and yawned.

“What… else do we need…?”

 “Towels!” Lin said surprisingly excited.

“What? Why? The ones we have are—’

“No, they’re not perfectly fine.” Before Thomas could finish, Lin pulled his phone. “Look at our towels! They’re so thin I can almost see through! How many fingers am I holding up?”

“You’re exaggerating.” Thomas didn’t even look at the phone. But when Lin insisted, he glanced at the photo.

Lin was under the clothesline, holding one of their hand towel open. Behind the fabric, Thomas could tell his childhood friend was holding two fingers up.

“Fine… Let’s buy the damn towels. Now can we go home? I wanna sleep until dinner…”

“But we’re not even close to finishing.”

“What? There’s still more?”

“Yes. We still need a new broom, a mop, washcloths, floor cloths… And no, the rival team’s uniform doesn’t count,” Lin added before Thomas could say anything. “I can’t believe you really bought that… what a waste of money… aren’t those uniform expensive?”

“It’s a fake one… and that shirt is a good floor cloth,” he said, shrugging and smiling as he remembered the day he bought.

Thomas was drunk and walking near the other team’s stadium just before a game. When he saw someone selling the fake uniform, he bought while saying to anyone who would head how he planned to use the uniform. Needless to say, he had to get out of there in a hurry.

Lin rolled his eyes as he raised his hand and counted on his fingers. “Anyway. We still need cleaning supplies, kitchen utensils, trash bins, dustpan… what else…?”

“I don’t think our apartment is even big enough for all that.”

“Even so, we need those things,” Lin said in a low voice. Then he blushed while playing with his fingers. “Since neither of us is getting married and moving away like your old roommate anytime soon, we should make our apartment in a home… don’t you think it’d be nice?”

Thomas felt his heart thumping louder under that expression. What the hell, dude? Don’t make that face! And you wanna make the apartment a home? That’s why people say we’re married!

All that went through Thomas’ mind. But all he said was, “Fine… let’s buy all that…”

Lin beamed. “Really?”

Thomas pressed his lips and averted his eyes, his cheeks burning… “Yeah… a home with you doesn’t sound bad at all…”

With Lin smiling and Thomas blushing, the childhood friends resumed the shopping for their apartment.

I can’t believe my wife is a man… and I’m not even married…

But it’s not so bad…
